Local Government Reorganisation: Consultation Launched
The government has launched a consultation on local government reorganisation proposals for Oxfordshire, with responses accepted until 26 March 2026.
Published: 26 March 2026
Local Government Reorganisation is a government-led reform to change how councils in two-tier areas are structured, replacing county and district councils with single unitary structures responsible for local services.
The government has launched a consultation on changes to councils in our area. Have your say until Thursday 26th March 2026.
The government is consulting on three options for our area:
– One unitary for Oxfordshire
– Two unitaries – Oxford & Shires (Cherwell, Oxford City and West Oxfordshire District Councils) and Ridgeway (South Oxfordshire, Vale of White Horse, plus West Berkshire)
– Three unitaries – Greater Oxford, Northern Oxfordshire and Ridgeway (NB: Weston on the Green would fall under the Greater Oxford area reflecting a boundary change for Oxford City)
This is not an optional change – the Government will make the final decision.
